Mission at St. John’s
“The mission of St. John the Evangelist Church is to enable members to share their faith by reaching out to others as a caring community, reflecting God’s love for all creation, revealed through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
God is always out there ahead of us, leading us into the future. If we want to follow our mission and to be working hand in hand with God, we have to be willing to be a missional Church meeting this day’s spiritual, environmental, and social challenges.
St. John’s is a “make room” congregation opening self to embrace God’s creation of humanity in all its diversity.
Parish environmental initiatives include:
o 10kws of solar panels;
o Low-flush toilets;
o Programmable thermostats;
o Recycling and composting,
o LED lighting retrofit of the church,
o Organic gardening; use of flowers from St. John’s garden for the altar.
o St. John’s Cupboard provides two days food supplies to clients each week;
o Nearly New redistributes household goods;
o Church Family Care maintains contact with sick or disabled parishioners;
o The Prayer Shawl Ministry seeks to lift the spirit those struggling;
o Fair Trade coffee is used at St. Johns.
In the city:
o St. John’s Craft Group provides fellowship and engages in several projects each year that reach out side of St. John’s to address needs;
o Parishioners support local endeavours such as Elevate NWO and others through the distribution of Christmas Cheer and Lenten Funds.
o Parishioners belong to the Anglican – Lutheran Women’s Committee to address poverty and provide bursaries for those in need.
In the world:
o The congregation supports Primates World Relief and Development Fund activities and Oxfam;
o Specialized missional endeavours such as the Mission to Seafarers, Camp Gitchegoomee Summer Camp.
o Thunder Bay North Shore Deanery joint Anglican outreach events—Tarime Dinner and Shelter House BBQ—are supported hands on, with financial support, and /or by providing facilities.
“Come and journey with us” is an invitation to embody and express God’s shalom. St. Johns strives to be a missional community in the image of early church transposed to a new time and a new culture. Our mission is both local and beyond as St. John’s parishioners participate in community for the welfare of all our neighbours.
